NEW REPORTS CONFIRM NSW GOVERNMENT HAS FAILED AT RISK KIDS

NEW REPORTS CONFIRM NSW GOVERNMENT HAS FAILED AT RISK KIDS

Over the past few weeks, we have seen key reports from different sources all carrying a similar message: the child protection system is in crisis and in need of urgent system reform with significant investment for early intervention and prevention.

In light of these reports, Fams has published a media release outlining the urgent need for significant investment and resourcing of early intervention and prevention.

We also stand by Absec’s call for a Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People.

You can find out more about the reports mentioned previously below:

  • Absec and Aboriginal Legal Services’ ‘Family Is Culture’ community report card and media release criticises the government’s lack of urgency to address child protection reforms. It highlighted the need for real, tangible and swift action for meaningful change.
  • The NSW Auditor General called the system “inefficient, ineffective, and unsustainable”. It went on to state that despite recommendations, DCJ has not redirected from a crisis model to one that “supports families at the earliest point in the child protection process”.
  • The NSW Ombudsman recognises there is an OOHC reform agenda underway, but exposes issues not addressed by the existing agenda, and current harm the system poses to communities.
